Each year, Canadian Western Banks (CWB) across Canada dedicate a week to giving back to their community by volunteering with local charities. This October, employees from CWB’s Courtenay branch chose to spend their ‘Week of Caring’ with Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North, helping local families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.
Courtenay CWB employees spent time on Habitat’s construction site on 1330 Lake Trail Road, as well as the Comox Valley ReStore. Their week volunteering with Habitat left a lasting impression on the CWB team.
“I want to thank the team at Habitat for allowing us the privilege of working with their organization,” said Barbara Cousens, manager of sales and service at CWB Courtenay. “We had a 92% participation rate from our staff and every single person involved came back raving about the project, the quality of the people they worked with, the satisfaction they felt and the volunteer opportunity itself.”
“We were grateful that CWB chose Habitat for this year’s ‘Week of Caring’. It fit well with our ‘Team Build Day’ initiative, where we encourage local businesses to take a day away from the office to build up their team and their community,” explained Terri Perrin, community engagement manager for Habitat VIN. “It’s an amazing example of corporate responsibility that CWB dedicates a week to giving back each year.”
Like many first-time volunteers at Habitat, the CWB team is already planning a return visit.
“I have heard several times from the staff that they we should do this again soon, and we have a number of staff committed to helping out in the near future in different capacities,” said Cousens. “We look forward to working with Habitat again in the very near future.”
What is Week of Caring?
Held in a variety of CWB’s Western Canadian locations, this week-long event allows employees to stretch their charitable muscles and give back a few hours to those who need it most.
Last year over 600 CWB employees gave more than 1500 volunteer hours to their communities. These staggering results left lasting impressions on many impactful organizations such as area food banks, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and drop-in shelters.
