In an extraordinary show of generosity and community spirit, two companies have joined forces to support Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North’s efforts to build 19 affordable homes for local families by 2020.
Roofing manufacturer GAF, a major corporate partner with Habitat for Humanity Canada, has committed to donate roofing materials to both Habitat VIN’s 10-home project on 1330 Lake Trail Road in Courtenay and the nine remaining homes to be completed at the 477 Hilchey Road project in Campbell River.
Since 2011, GAF has donated roofing materials to Habitat builds across Canada in support of projects where their factory-certified contractors donate labour. Nelson Roofing & Sheet Metal Ltd., a GAF Master Elite contractor based out of Cumberland, stepped up in cooperation with the local 276 Sheet Metal Workers Union to supply the labour for all 19 homes.
“GAF is proud to support Habitat for Humanity in their efforts to provide local families with quality, affordable housing,” said Brad Hodgens, GAF Territory Manager. “We are thankful for Nelson Roofing & Sheet Metal LTD, and our generous network of factory-certified contractors whose labour contributions leave a lasting impact on local communities.”
This remarkable collaboration will provide free roofing and installation for all of Habitat VIN’s homes for both multi-phase projects, representing a construction costs savings of close to $50,000 for the non-profit. Even more importantly, it shows how organizations and businesses working in a spirit of collaboration can make a significant impact in their community.
“This generous donation will help us fulfil our most ambitious plans to date,” said Tom Beshr, Habitat VIN’s director of development. “Major community partnerships like this are what enables us to build more homes and partner with more local families in need of a safe and affordable place to live.”
