The first duplex on 477 Hilchey Road in Campbell River is beginning to look like a home.
Both the first and second floor walls have been transported from our pre-fabrication shop where they were built, to the build site where they were raised by our volunteers. Conditions were wet for the first set of walls, but despite being up to their ankles in mud, our volunteers persevered.
For the second year in a row, we have partnered with North Island College to have students from their Carpentry Foundations program help with our build project. With this mutually beneficial relationship, students gain valuable hands-on experience and Habitat acquires a group of eager, hardworking volunteers! Students will be working on the build three days a week until mid-May.
Next week trusses arrive, and excitement is building as we get closer transforming this structure into a home for two local families.
We still are in need of more volunteers to complete this project. We’re particularly looking for crew leaders, but we also need site hosts, drivers/runners, and people of all skill levels to help with general construction. If you’re interested in getting involved, schedule yourself for a shift or contact our Build Volunteer Coordinator Lynnette Hornung at (250)-830-1493 Ext. 223.
If you’re unsure about build volunteering, we will be hosting Build Information Sessions right at the build site for the next two Thursdays in a row (April 27th and May 4th). These take place in the garage at 477 Hilchey Road from 1-2pm.
