On Friday, May 18th at 10:00 a.m. we will hold a groundbreaking and site dedication ceremony to kick off construction of the first two duplexes in what will be a multi-phased 10-unit affordable housing complex.
The .83 (.36 hectare) parcel of land on at 1330 Lake Trail Road will be a three-year phased development with four homes being built in 2018. This is also the first time in our 14-year history that we are building simultaneously in two communities. An 11-unit development is underway on Hilchey Road in Campbell River.
Habitat volunteers and staff, officials from The City of Courtenay, MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard, other dignitaries, and some of our future homeowner families will join us for this momentous occasion.
We are also thrilled to have representatives of the McQuillan family, the original homesteaders on this property, at this event. They will say a few words to acknowledge the history of the property and celebrate its new future as a Habitat for Humanity development.
We are also hosting a ‘Women Build’ campaign at the Lake Trail property for this construction season, where women can fundraise, volunteer to build, or both! Women Build is challenging 100 women to raise $100,000 in 100 days. And, in an industry that has been historically dominated by men, Women Build encourages women to put on a hard hat, pick up a hammer, and help build a brighter future for local families.
