Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North is seeking Campbell River families who are in need of safe, decent, and affordable homes. The chosen families will be placed in Habitat VIN’s current multi-unit build project on 477 Hilchey Road, which will eventually house 11 local families.
Interested families are invited to attend an information session on Thursday, February 22nd at 6:30 p.m. This will be held at the Campbell River Community Centre, and family services coordinator Karen Bezaire will be on hand to answer questions and help with the application process.
Habitat partners with local working families with children. Many of the families live in unsafe, overcrowded, or unaffordable rental conditions. Families who partner with Habitat will have demonstrated examples of community involvement, volunteerism, work ethic, and work history.
Future homeowners will complete 500 hours of volunteering to help build their home or they may volunteer in Habitat’s social enterprise the ReStore. This component is called ‘sweat equity’ and it’s done in place of a down payment. After moving into their home, they pay an affordable interest-free mortgage set at 30 percent of their household income.
