Educating our homeowner families on financial management is one of the most important and effective measures we take to ensure their success, as well as a key contributor to an extremely low mortgage default rate and average annual income growth of 5.2%.
In 2017, we extended this program to the entire community with Invest in Yourself, a free comprehensive financial planning course.
Facilitated by Family Services Manager Karen Bezaire, and in partnership with the Coastal Community Credit Union, Invest in Yourself has been successful in both the Comox Valley and Campbell River, with more locations and dates on the way.
“One of the biggest problems I see with people who are in debt is that they don’t have complete knowledge about how much they spend,” says Bezaire. “The result is that they spend more than they make month after month. Doing this for years on end eventually results in huge amounts of debt. Invest in Yourself is designed to tackle this debt and help you plan for the future.”
Invest in Yourself includes instruction on financial management, investing, budgeting, and insurance. Participants learn to get out of debt, stay out of debt, and save for the future. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.
