Months of hard work by volunteers, staff, and our partner families themselves have paid off, and we’re inviting the community to join us in celebration as we hand over the keys to these two very deserving families.
The duplex, located at 129 Westgate Road, will be home to Benny and Maggie McGrath and their three children, plus Melissa Hamstra and her two children. Benny, Maggie, and Melissa have worked side-by-side with other volunteers to participate in the construction of their homes.
When asked about her involvement with Habitat, Hamstra says, “The entire process has been remarkable. The employees at Habitat are amazing. Construction work is not a natural talent for me and, thanks to Peter Sanderson (Build Coordinator) and Steve Dally (Lead Carpenter), I have learned a lot. They are two of the most patient people I have ever met! It is also important to mention the volunteers and organizations that have given so much in order to help my family. I can’t wait to be in our new home. There are no words to express my gratitude.”
“This experience inspires me to want to be a bigger part of my community,” states McGrath. “I was especially impressed seeing so many retirees helping on the build. These are people who have done their part [for society] and are still working to improve the community for other people’s sake. I am honestly still in shock about what is happening. Homeownership was a dream that, six months ago, seemed impossible for Maggie and me. This time last year we were at a loss as to how we were going to have any financial security for our future. Now, we will soon have a house to call home. The kids are excited to have a yard, to be able to ride their bikes in the neighbourhood, and to choose paint colours for their own rooms.”
The public and build supporters are welcome to join Habitat for Humanity at the home dedication and key ceremony at 129 Westgate Road (at the corner of Dalton), Campbell River at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30th. Refreshments will be served. During the dedication ceremony, both homeowners will be presented with several symbolic gifts to welcome them to their new homes. Attendees will then be able to tour the homes.
